Alison Robertson - Hamilton
My background is radio news and sport. In 1998 when I was living in Porirua, I applied and was lucky enough to be selected for Whitireia Polytechnic's writing programme.
At the end of the year I started writing my first novel Knocked for Six, which won the Tom Fitzgibbon Award and then the Esther Glen medal. Finding Isabella was my second novel and I lost count of the number of rewrites that were required to get it into a form Scholastic would publish.
I earn most of my money working as a writer at the University of Waikato.

Dawn McMillan - Thames
I began writing when I was about nine. Small stories and poems were published in a local newspaper and in the children's pages of a national magazine. As I became involved in study, a teaching career and then the role of motherhood I wrote less and less. In my late thirties I began to write poetry again.
Since moving to the Thames Coast in 1995 I have been writing picture books scripts and educational readers. I work from a little studio in my back garden. I look out of my studio window across the park to the beach. I live with my husband, Derek, who is very good at bringing me cups of tea while I work, and with our cat, Josie.

His international background has afforded him a wide geographic and cultural experiences, while the scientific work has given him insights into the behaviours of the sea mammals and birds that are at the heart of the tales of Tom Hassler. Visit the Tom Hassler website here
